Introduction / Overview:
Every day in every health care / aged care / community setting there are thousands of care episodes provided to clients with various levels of acuity and need. In most instances the care is exemplary, the information collected and documented sound. However, from time to time health practitioners are challenged by events or another’s (resident, family member or health professional) decision where it becomes necessary to revisit legal and ethical frameworks to ensure they are providing the best possible care in the circumstances.
Content covered in this webinar will provide participants with the opportunity to refresh their understanding on ethical decision making using a clinical ethical decision framework and the legal framework that guides their practice. Topics will include – what is ethical decision making, duty of care, standards of practice, professional standards, codes and guidelines. Accountability, delegation and supervision responsibilities will be explored with respect to individual roles working in a multidisciplinary team.

Recognise the health practitioner’s responsibilities in accountability, delegation and supervision

Understand and apply steps in ethical decision making to resolve ethical and legal dilemmas

Identify the health practitioners obligation in managing poor performance and bullying in the workplace

Discuss trespass to the person in the context of consent and refusal of treatment
